The Alabama Tourism Department defended the state’s pavilion at the Great American State Fair from criticism on Wednesday.

State Rep. Craig Lipscomb (R-Gadsden) said recently he had heard from constituents that Alabama’s display was “the weakest of all the states” and that Alabama is missing an opportunity to tell its story.

The display in Washington, D.C. is part of America's 250th birthday celebration, including all states and territories.

Brooklyn Lundy, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Tourism Department, told 1819 News on Wednesday, “We have not received any complaints. In fact, we have had nothing but glowing reviews about our booth at the Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C., saying it is one of the busiest booths at the event.”

“At Sweet Home Alabama, we did not and do not look at this event like we are in competition with other states, but merely showcasing what our state has to offer during the 250th year of America,” Lundy said. “The Alabama Tourism Department launched the Year of Alabama Trails for our annual “Year of” campaign. This campaign is acknowledged at our booth with the “South’s Finest Trail Mix” giveaways, which include peanuts, pecans, dried cranberries, and golden raisins, all sourced from Alabama. Our website provides broad and niche trails perfect for every traveler to follow while visiting our state. We also have a trail of 250 Uniquely Alabama sites to visit.”

The fair is being held through July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
