The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham issued a winter storm warning for much of the northern half and central Alabama as the state prepares for impactful winter weather.

With snow, sleet and freezing rain expected, driving conditions will likely deteriorate quickly on Thursday afternoon.
In the case of black ice on roadways, ALDOT will focus on providing a single passable lane on interstates and major arteries.
In Calhoun County, all offices, including the courthouse and administration building will be closed on Friday.
Several school systems will also be closed, so it's important to check local schools, businesses and agencies ahead of time.
The Gadsden/Etowah County EMA warned essential workers should prepare for transportation now.
The Jackson County EMA said now is the time to have a plan, gather emergency supplies for your home and car and ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
Officials ask all other motorists to avoid travel if hazardous road conditions develop.
