BIRMINGHAM — The Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation (NLOCF) celebrated 20 years of existence Sunday at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. Seven-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller was the keynote speaker for the event.

Miller, an ovarian cancer survivor, shared her story about challenges and victories over her lifetime. She paralleled her battle with cancer to her time in the 1996 Olympics, when she had a team of people coaching her and cheering her on.

"It's true in work, in life, and it is true in the fight against cancer, both in helping our survivors and in finding a cure," Miller said. "During my cancer battle, it really was the goals that kept me moving in a forward direction."

"I know that many of us, I think really all of us, will be affected by cancer in some way, shape or form in this life," she added. "And today is an opportunity for us to reach out, to stand together in the fight against ovarian cancer."

Miller said there were times when she felt she truly couldn't survive her battle with cancer. However, she realized she had a team fighting with her, and she believes that made her stronger. That moment made her realize she wanted to help other women impacted by ovarian cancer.

"We're not in this alone," Miller said. "Everyone here in this room, you prove that there is always a community available."

"… Today let us celebrate each of you and the work that you do to help those who are facing this battle," she continued. "Let us celebrate each day, each moment. The insight that I've gained through the cancer process is that we all must take control of our early health."

The NLOCF funds vital research, raises awareness of the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer and risk factors and provides patient and caregiver support.

Lori Livingston started the foundation after losing her mother, Norma, to ovarian cancer.
