LaFayette Mayor Kenneth Vines confirmed one person was killed in a shooting outside the high school football stadium Friday night.
The LaFayette Police Department responded to the scene across the street from the high school football stadium during halftime.
Witnesses reported hearing two shots fired near a home across the street from the stadium on Alabama Avenue East. A live stream showed the response of first responders and people in the stadium being asked to stay in place. An ambulance transported one person, who was later pronounced dead. The name of the victim has not been released.
Vines said the incident had nothing to do with the football game and asked residents not to post about the death out of respect for the victim's family.
“Last night, a tragic loss occurred in our beloved city,” Vines stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased.”
Vines said the incident should not be associated with LaFayette High School and the city of LaFayette.
Vines said the incident was isolated, and an arrest has been made. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
