One of the two victims shot Sunday in Mobile’s Saenger Theatre at a children’s dance recital has died.
The shooting took place around 6:30 p.m. Sunday. An argument broke out between two subjects who knew each other. One pulled out a gun and shot the other and one additional victim. The shooter fled the scene but later turned himself in. He has been identified by WKRG-TV News as 27-year-old Marcus Sanders of Mobile. He has been charged with one count of murder and one count of assault.
There are no other suspects, and there is believed to be no further danger.
While the dance recital participants were all children, the participants in the argument and shooting were all adults. The dance recital was abruptly ended at the time of the shooting. The children were not allowed to finish their recital and were ushered out of the Saenger.
There is no report yet on the identification and condition of the other wounded victim.
Mobile Police chief William Jackson made a statement after the shooting, saying, “To bring this to a child’s dance recital is completely unacceptable.”
He said the metal detectors and other measures to prevent the presence of guns inside the Saenger were apparently not operative.
The Saenger is supposedly a gun-free zone.
The incident has sparked citizen outrage on social media.
