Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp announced on Wednesday that it was discontinuing orthopedic services in a cost-saving measure, effective June 20.
Dr. Lori Stanfield, interim CEO of Mizell Memorial Hospital, said in a letter on Wednesday, “On May 8, 2025, after careful analysis, the officers and Board of Directors of Mizell Memorial Hospital have made the difficult decision to discontinue our Orthopedic Surgical Services, effective June 20, 2025.”
“This decision is part of 'Operation Mission Mizell,' a strategic cost reduction plan aimed at decreasing hospital expenses by $2.4 million annually," Stanfield said. "Every department was carefully reviewed for cost efficiency and sustainability. While orthopedic services provided important care, the service line incurred a net loss of over $250,000 last year."
"To ensure the accuracy of this assessment, we conducted a thorough financial review, carefully ruling out factors such as billing or authorization discrepancies to ensure a clear and accurate picture. Rural hospitals like Mizell face growing financial challenges due to rising operational costs and limited reimbursements. To continue providing high-quality care, we must focus our resources on services that are both essential and financially sustainable. Mizell has proudly served the Opp community for over 75 years, and we remain committed to delivering the best care possible while safeguarding our future,” Stanfield added.
