The Orange Beach City Council recognized a local doctor for his efforts to save the life of 15-year-old Lulu Gribbin after a shark attacked her on June 7.

The attack happened at Rosemary Beach, Fla., where Dr. Ryan Forbess was vacationing with family. He and another doctor sprang into action with other first responders who were on the beach when the teen was pulled from the water.

Forbess owns Orange Beach Family Medicine.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon said Forbess' actions helped save Gribbin's life and called him a true local hero.

Gribbin, who is from Mountain Brook, lost her left hand and her right leg and has undergone several surgeries. Her mom said she has made great strides and continues to impress doctors and occupational therapists at the hospital.

Gribbin's friend was also injured in the shark attack but is expected to recover. Another woman was attacked by a shark on the same day just a few miles down the beach.
