As state lawmakers reevaluate the funding for Magic City Acceptance Academy, one of the nation's first charter schools specifically catering to LGBTQ+ students and their allies, State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) suggested that the school faces "dark fiscal days ahead."
Huntsville WVNN "The Dale Jackson Show" host Dale Jackson asked Orr about the Birmingham school, which is funded by Alabama tax dollars, following a recent report about how a now-former administrator offered thousands of dollars for a student to have life-altering surgery and more.
According to Orr, the school is under review and faces losing funding if "some of this bears out."
"[S]o, that school is under review by the Charter School Commission. They've been summoned to the carpet and stand before the commission. And that's one thing, that's one item that's happening now," he outlined in his weekly appearance.

"The other is the legislative process and their appropriations," Orr continued. "And I can see dark fiscal days ahead for that academy if some of this all bears out. And it's already being discussed here in the early days of the legislative session, Dale, about, alright, what are we going to do with that school in Birmingham? And so it is right in front of us in the appropriation side.”
