A Bessemer woman was placed behind bars after Calera Police said she shot into a car over a parking spot at Walmart.
Police responded to the shooting at 11:10 a.m. Friday. They discovered a bullet hole in the back driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle.
Police Chief David Hyche said the bullet traveled close to a car seat in the back of the vehicle.
“Our country has serious problems when people get so angry over a parking spot that they pull out a gun and fire into an occupied vehicle,” said Hyche. “If a child had been in that car seat, this could have been a far more tragic event.”
The victim told police the suspect exited her vehicle with her gun and fired a shot into the car. A suspect description was given to investigators, and they located her within 20 minutes.
Police believe Destini Nicole Rogers changed the tag on her vehicle after leaving the scene, but they used witness testimony and Walmart surveillance video to confirm her identity.
“I want to commend the witness for stepping forward and providing information,” Hyche added. “I also want to personally thank our dispatchers and officers who were short-staffed and slammed with calls today. They immediately responded, passed on vital information and made the arrest. That’s how it’s done! I’m also grateful that we have the extra bodies from our SRO crew in the summer to help out when we are overwhelmed. We will be working with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office now to charge the suspect appropriately.”
Rogers was placed in the Shelby County Jail and charged with discharging a gun into an occupied dwelling. She was given a $30,000 bond.
Rogers is considered innocent until proven guilty.
