Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced Tuesday that 300 tons of trash and garbage were collected during Mardi Gras this year.
Public works sorted through for recyclable material, and this season, they collected and shipped 8,977 pounds.
“Mardi Gras remains a unique cultural experience for locals and visitors, in large part because of the great work our city employees do to prepare for and clean up after the parades,” Stimpson said. “That effort is highlighted by the sheer volume of trash, garbage, and recyclables our staff collects throughout each Carnival season.”
The 3,730 pounds of beads collected after parades will be donated to Augusta Evans Special School. The school resells the beads to support student programs.
The school is also taking donations this Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. In exchange for one grocery bag of beads, people get a voucher for one dozen glazed doughnuts from Krispy Kreme.
“That’s what I call a win-win,” Stimpson added.
