Oxford Police chief Bill Patridge reminded citizens that Thursday is Autism Awareness Day as the department focuses on training and programs for those with neurodevelopmental conditions.

“We celebrate the unique perspectives and strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum, fostering understanding, acceptance and a commitment to creating a more inclusive world for all,” Partridge stated.

Earlier this year, the Oxford Police Department launched the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative to help individuals with disabilities and communication challenges. The purpose is to ensure those with conditions such as autism, dementia, anxiety have safer, smoother interactions with law enforcement.

Drivers can discreetly alert officers to their conditions with a blue envelope that contains their driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and more information. Blue envelopes are available at the Oxford Police Department and at all department-sponsored events.

Last year, the department announced the Special Needs Alert Program (SNAP), which provides support and resources for families and individuals. It enables residents to share special needs information with first responders.
