Ozark's director of public safety and police chief, Charles Ward, announced he is running for mayor.

Ward said that on National Bee Day, he thought about how a beehive functions with each type of bee having an important job to do to make the hive survive and thrive. Ward said that’s how a city should function, and that’s how he wants to run the city.

“You get to see God’s magnificent, awesome wonder, how he organizes us to survive,” Ward said.

Ward asked for a leave of absence from his current position to run his campaign. If he is not elected, he asked the city council to reinstate his position.

Ward has experience as a dispatcher, firefighter, EMS and as director of public safety for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Ozark Mayor Mark Blankenship is running for re-election with a platform of "Building Ozark Together."
