MONTGOMERY — The Alabama House Republican Caucus announced on Wednesday that State Rep. Paul Lee (R-Dothan) has been elected House majority leader for the remainder of the quadrennium after State Rep. Scott Stadthagen (R-Hartselle) resigned from the post to seek election as chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
Stadthagen originally said last week, after a contentious caucus meeting, that he was only taking a few weeks' leave of absence from the role until after the March 7 Alabama Republican Party chairman's election.
Elected in the 2010 freshman class that captured a Republican majority in the Alabama Legislature for the first time in 136 years, Lee currently chairs the House Health Committee and has served as a member of that committee for each of the past 16 years.
"Our House Republican Caucus must keep its focus on the important issues and initiatives being discussed during the 2026 regular session and finish the job that each of us were sent to Montgomery to complete," Lee said. "At the same time, we must continue representing the conservative beliefs, traditional values, and bedrock Republican principles that our Caucus members embrace and share with our constituents back home."
Lee also serves on the House Ways and Means General Fund Committee and holds a seat on the Legislative Council, which is composed of leaders from the House and Senate and directs most operations of the Alabama Legislature.
