The CASC Montgomery Gun Show set for November 1 should be subject to a “temporary pause and review” after a deadly Saturday night shootout in downtown Montgomery, according to Montgomery City Councilwoman Marche Johnson.
Johnson said on Facebook on Wednesday, “In light of recent events and growing concerns around unregistered firearms in our community, I am calling for a temporary pause and review of the upcoming Gun Show in Montgomery.”
“This is not a call against responsible gun ownership — it’s a call for accountability and safety. We must ensure that all firearms entering our communities are properly registered and that background checks are consistently enforced for public events of this nature,” Johnson said. “Our goal is to protect families, reduce gun violence, and create policies that make Montgomery safer for everyone. I am committed to working with event organizers, law enforcement, and state leaders to put clear safeguards in place before such events move forward."
"We can respect the Second Amendment and protect our citizens — those two priorities must go hand in hand," she added.
BamaCarry, a “no compromise” gun rights group, came out in opposition to the Montgomery Gun Show pause on Thursday in a statement to 1819 News.
Taylor Rhodes, a spokesman for BamaCarry, said, “There is no such thing as a ‘pause’ on the Second Amendment.”
“The right to keep and bear arms isn’t up for review, debate, or political convenience - it’s guaranteed by both the U.S. and Alabama Constitutions,” Rhodes added. “Councilwoman Johnson’s call to halt a lawful gun show isn’t about safety; it’s about control. BamaCarry will fight any attempt to chip away at the rights of law-abiding gun owners in this state, no matter how it’s disguised.”
The CASC Montgomery Gun Show is scheduled to be held at the Alcazar Shrine Center on November 1-2.
