The Troy Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a Troy woman. The suspect in the case is in the country illegally, according to officials.
Annie Laura Cooper, 59, was struck by a vehicle on December 21 while walking along U.S. 231 South.
Troy police officers responded and found Cooper unresponsive. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Investigators with TPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit developed leads suggesting a vehicle out of George County, Miss., was involved. With assistance from George County deputies, the vehicle was located, and the driver was extradited to Troy.
“I want to thank our investigators and deputies for their professionalism and assistance in this case, as well as the Troy Police Department for their cooperation,” stated George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon. “Working together across jurisdictions is essential when investigating serious incidents, and we are proud to support our law enforcement partners.”
Malvin Geovany Villalobos-Bonilla was charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident with death. According to police, Villalobos-Bonilla is an illegal alien from Honduras who was previously deported.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified.
The Lucedale Police Department and the Pike County District Attorney’s Office are also assisting in the case.
