The mayor of Prichard, a city embroiled in controversy over crime and city utility scandals, announced that he will run for re-election.

Jimmie Gardner has been mayor since his 2016 win.

During that time, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office took over major law enforcement investigations, and the Prichard Water Works and Sewer Board was involved in a corruption investigation that led to several arrests.

Gardner, who serves on the board for the World Conference of Mayors, has called for "common sense and unity" on the national front.

"Now, more than ever, it is time for every American—regardless of whether you identify as an Independent, Republican, or Democrat—to embrace common sense and a moral compass," Gardner posted on social media. "We must evaluate what is true and what is false, rejecting gaslighting and political rhetoric without first fact-checking the validity of what we are being told."

Other candidates participating in a mayoral candidate forum are Carletta Davis, Rodney Clements, Terrance Harris, Helen Wright and Anthony Clarkbanks. The forum will be on May 1 at Destiny Vision Christian Center.
