As the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office works to investigate crimes in Prichard, Mayor Carletta Davis said police officers with the city are still reporting to duty.

Davis said she has received questions regarding the police department’s status after an officer’s arrest led to the sheriff’s office taking over.

“Our top priority is, and will continue to be, maintaining control of our public safety services and ensuring continuity of law enforcement services for our community members,” Davis said. “I want to assure the Prichard community that this administration remains fully engaged, fully informed and fully cooperating with all agencies throughout this process. Day-to-day operations are being handled in coordination with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to ensure there is no lapse in service to our citizens.”

Mobile County is covering the cost of the sheriff’s office’s operations in Prichard. Davis said she wants to rebuild the Prichard Police Department with the help of a public safety consultant.

“Our Administration has always envisioned a safer Prichard and has listened closely to community members who have shared concerns about public safety in their homes and neighborhoods,” she added. “In response, we are prepared to ask the City Council to approve the search for a top-tier Public Safety Consultant to assist with evaluating, restructuring, and rebuilding the City’s Police Department.”

The consultant would help identify needs and deficiencies within the department. Davis said she would like to see the police department become nationally accredited.
