A Prichard police officer is under investigation and on administrative leave after he helped a woman get away from her husband by striking him multiple times with a bat.

Officer Tvon Campbell was caught on video hitting the man.

The incident began with a domestic violence call at the couple's home. When police arrived, 41-year-old Devoris Malone hit his wife in the chest and forced her to drive away, leading police on a chase. They said the wife was being held against her will.

Eventually, the vehicle was stopped, but Malone refused to surrender. The police officer used the bat to force Malone to comply as his wife escaped the vehicle.

The incident was caught on cell phone video and shared multiple times on social media. Malone told police he didn't do anything to his wife while he was being taken into custody.

Campbell was placed on leave while Prichard conducts an internal investigation. Police said a bat is not an approved defense weapon for law enforcement.

Both Malone and Campbell are considered innocent. Campbell has not been charged with a crime.
