Prichard Mayor Carletta Davis revealed that the city’s police chief resigned after a week of controversy and arrests.
Chief Walter Knight is charged with use of official position or office for personal gain and theft by deception. Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood announced the arrest Wednesday, revealing that Knight is accused of using public equipment for side jobs escorting funeral processions. Maj. Aaron Tucker was also charged.
Davis said she spoke with Knight and requested his resignation, which she received. Tucker has been placed on paid administrative leave.
“The city of Prichard is facing one of the most difficult moments in the history of our Police Department,” Davis stated. “As mayor, my foremost responsibility is to protect the safety of our residents while ensuring that the city government operates with integrity and accountability.”
Davis said after reviewing grand jury recommendations to dissolve the police department, city leaders are exploring all options. Cpt. Maxine Mark will oversee daily operations as the City determines how any transition can be handled, Davis added.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has taken over law enforcement operations in Prichard.
All parties are considered innocent until proven guilty.
