The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Prichard police officer after detectives said he withheld evidence during an arrest.

Malachi Ligon is charged with third-degree theft of property and distributing a private image without consent.

Deputies said the charges stem from the arrest of Theodore Roberts, Jr., for third-degree domestic violence and resisting arrest. Ligon arrested Roberts on Tuesday, and instead of entering Roberts’ phone into evidence, investigators accused him of going through the device and sending explicit, private images and videos to Roberts’ wife.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office consulted with the District Attorney’s Office for the investigation.

“Investigators conducted witness interviews, reviewed digital evidence, obtained search warrants and interviewed Officer Malachi Ligon,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Ligon also had an outstanding warrant with Alabama State Troopers for a speeding violation, the sheriff’s office added.

Ligon is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Ligon worked with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office in 2023 as a provisional corrections officer. His employment was terminated before the end of his 30-day probation period.
