The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) recently announced the arrest of two employees who were charged with attempting to bring in multiple forms of drugs, weapons and cell phones.
Niana Longmire and Carmelo Hopkins, both of whom have since resigned from ADOC, were arrested on felony charges related to the attempted introduction of contraband into Elmore Correctional Facility. The pair were arrested after ADOC K-9 handlers and narcotics agents conducted a joint investigation into suspected contraband activity.
Longmire admitted to previously introducing contraband into the facility and identified additional contraband, which was recovered by K-9 handlers and agents before it entered the facility.
Longmire was charged with conspiracy to traffic fentanyl, meth, opioids and synthetic cannabinoids, as well as promoting prison contraband in the first and second degree.
In total, police recovered 138 grams of fentanyl, 29 grams of meth, 152 grams of sprayed paper, 109 grams of the synthetic drug flakka, two folding knives, two USB drives, two Apple AirPods, 10 earbuds, 12 cell phones and 10 USB cords.
Further investigation determined that Hopkins knowingly conspired in the criminal activity. Hopkins was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime.
