A community march and protest are being planned later this month as a show of support for Deshler High School student athlete August Borden.

Borden was severely injured on August 14, apparently while walking to football practice from the main school building. According to Chief Deputy District Attorney for Madison County, Tim Gann, Borden sustained his injuries after another student "bear hugged" him from behind, causing Borden to go limp and fall to the ground.

Gann concluded his investigation on October 8, announcing that the incident was a case of horseplay gone wrong and the DA would not be pressing charges.

The DA's decision was met with outrage from Borden's parents and some members of the community who have been calling for justice and accountability since the day of the incident. Many have accused the school of trying to cover up the truth to protect the student responsible, an alleged star football player.

To voice continued concern and desire for justice, a group is planning a pre-game protest on October 30 at the high school at noon, followed by a meet-up that evening at the football game between Deshler and West Morgan High School. There will also be a community march the following Friday morning, starting at the courthouse on Main Street in Tuscumbia at 10.

Terrence Wren, with We Are Human, put the word out on Facebook that he was organizing a march and protest for Borden.

"They are playing off what happened to August Borden's as a 'freak accident.' This was no accident," Wren said on Facebook. "Even Tim Gann stated August injuries did consist of an assault but believed it was due to horseplay. He closed August's case and decided not speak to doctors or truly investigate properly and allow those responsible for doing this to 15 year old August Borden just continue their lives with no accountability. August Borden can no longer play football or attend his freshman year of high school. He and his family deserves justice. We ask all that can come to please show up."

Wren encouraged attendees to wear yellow or something to show support for Borden, as well as bring signs.
