A young man was struck and killed while outside of his vehicle on Interstate 20 in Birmingham early Saturday.

Jagger Thorne Cox, 18, of Ragland, was fatally injured at mile marker 131, near Brussels Road and Georgia Road, at 4:15 a.m.

Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates said Cox’s vehicle was disabled, and when he got out of the vehicle, another car hit his, causing injury.

The Birmingham Police Department responded and is now investigating. Cox was pronounced dead on the scene.

Students gathered at Ragland High School for a prayer on Sunday evening.

“We suffered a huge loss for our program and the Ragland community,” Ragland Football posted on Facebook. “Jagger was faithful, tough always full of life! We will miss him greatly! When we walk with Jesus our walk doesn’t end here!! 19!!

A visitation will be on Tuesday at Hardin’s Chapel Church in Ragland, from noon until 2 p.m. and a service at 2 p.m.

According to those close to the family, Cox was planning to join the United States Marine Corps and was set to attend boot camp after the new year.
