Skywatchers will get the chance to see a rare micromoon this weekend. The blue micromoon will be the smallest-looking full moon of the year.

A micromoon is the opposite of a supermoon and means the moon will be the farthest from Earth. This weekend the moon will be 252,360 miles from Earth.

A blue moon is the second full moon in a month, and it will not appear blue. EarthSky reports the blue micromoon will not be seen again until Dec. 21, 2028.

Scientists say anyone who wants to see the micromoon will have to look carefully for it. It will appear 6% smaller and 10% dimmer than an average full moon.

The blue moon will peak at 3:45 a.m. Central Daylight Time Sunday.
