AUBURN — Hugh Freeze has elected to go with quarterback Hank Brown to take the first snaps for Auburn on Saturday, per multiple reports. It will be Brown’s first collegiate start.
Freeze told the media throughout the week that some changes were going to have to be made at the quarterback position if the lackluster performances continued.
"After watching the film, there is a very, very short leash on us playing as poorly as we did at that position. It’s not always the quarterback. One interception he gets hit with poor protection, the other deflected off the receiver’s hand,” he said.
Thorne finished last week’s game with four interceptions, with two coming on the last two drives of the game, halting the Tiger’s chances at a potential comeback.
Brown has played in two games throughout his time at Auburn. He threw for 96 yards in the 2024 season opener with Alabama A&M and went 7-9 with 132 yards in last year’s bowl game against Maryland.
“I learned quite a bit about both kids and how they process things. It was very helpful to me,” Freeze said after meeting with both quarterbacks individually on Monday.
Brown will have the opportunity to warm-up with a New Mexico defense that allows 48 points per game.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
