Four Republican candidates have officially qualified for the July 15 special election for the recently opened seat in Alabama’s House District 12.
The HD12 seat became vacant after former State Rep. Corey Harbison (R-Good Hope) left, saying he wanted to spend more time with family.
Governor Kay Ivey set the special primary election for Tuesday, July 15. The special primary runoff, if necessary, is set for Tuesday, August 12, with a special general election for Tuesday, October 28.
No Democrats have announced a candidacy for the seat thus far, while four Republicans have qualified: Cullman City Councilman and local businessman Clint Hollingsworth, Cullman County resident and Smith Lake realtor Cindy Myrex, Heather Doyle and Dan McWhorter.
“I love our hometown and the people in it,” Myrex said after announcing her qualification. “I’m running because I believe it’s time we had a strong, local voice down in Montgomery who truly understands what matters most to folks around here — faith, family, and good, honest work.”
She continued, “My door is always open, and I’ll never forget who I’m working for. I’ll take our common sense and strong convictions with me every step of the way.”
Both Myrex and Hollingsworth are new to the world of state politics. However, Hollingsworth believes coming from his long experience in county government will aid him should he make it to the State House.
“I am proud to be running as a Republican candidate for House District 12,” Hollingsworth said. “I will work hard for the residents of Cullman County and fight so that they have a seat at the table in Montgomery. I will bring a conservative voice to the State House, a proven record of leadership, and experience of a small business owner to ensure that the needs of this community and my constituents always come first.”
