The race for Alabama's House District 65 has been called for the incumbent State Rep. Rick Rehm (R-Dothan), who defeated his Republican Primary opponent, former Henry County Probate Judge David Money, on Tuesday.
Rehm will now face the uncontested Democratic nominee, Aristotle Onassis Kirkland, in a district that was just flipped from Democrat to Republican when Rehm won the seat in 2022. The general election will be held on Nov. 3.
AP called the race for Rehm on Tuesday evening, reporting that the incumbent secured 56% of the vote, compared to Money's 44%. As of 11:00 p.m., a total of 3,212 votes were counted.
The race stayed relatively benign until the last month, when Money's campaign sent out multiple mailers accusing Rehm of being "bought and paid for by an out-of-state gambling interest."
Rehm responded to the attacks, claiming they were a desperate attempt from a candidate without a record on which to run.
