Last week, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) introduced a provision in the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would link the United States and Israeli militaries in unprecedented fashion.

The lawmaker's proposal, which would create the United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative (Section 224), was met with public and bipartisan criticism from opponents, who warned against further military integration as the Middle Eastern country continues to conduct combat operations across Gaza and Lebanon.

Rogers, chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, argued concerns from citizens and lawmakers regarding the legislation are merely a result of "misinformation" spread by "bad actors."

"Israel is far and away the best ally the United States has in the Middle East, and our cooperative programs with them strengthen our national security by giving our warfighters access to cutting-edge technologies," Rogers told 1819 News. "Section 224 of the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2027 doesn't create any new programs within the Department of Defense."

He continued, "It simply adds transparency and improves efficiency by designating a single official to coordinate existing initiatives. In no way does it give away command and control of our military operations, personnel, or equipment."

According to Rogers, the provision does not cede control of the American military to Israel.

"Misinformation in relation to Israel and our close partnership with them has always run rampant, and bad actors are all too happy to stoke these flames when given the opportunity," he explained. "Any narrative that this legislation is somehow ceding control to another country in any way is categorically false and misleading."

Added Rogers, "The NDAA strengthens American sovereignty and American national security first and foremost."

The provision is currently awaiting a committee markup from the HASC.
