Former Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks qualified with the Alabama Democratic Party on Tuesday for another run for the office in 2026.

Sparks previously served as commissioner from 2002 to 2010. He also won the Democratic primary for governor in 2010 but lost to Republican Gov. Robert Bentley in the general election.

Sparks said in a statement on Tuesday that he stands on his record of fighting for farmers, improving food safety and building three new animal diagnostic labs across the state.

If elected, Sparks said he planned to return the law enforcement division to the Department of Agriculture and Industries to help farmers with theft and consumers with fraud across the state.

“There’s no place for politics in the Department of Agriculture. I’m willing to work with all elected officials to make Alabama the best it can be,” Sparks said.
