Drivers in Collinsville were startled to spot a jumping kangaroo on the roadway Sunday.

Tray Reed took a video of the animal bouncing by County Road 83 around 7:15 p.m.

"I thought I was hallucinating," Reed told 1819 News.

Kangaroos are native to Eastern Australia, so it's not common to see one in the wild in Alabama.

However, 1819 News tracked down the kangaroo's owner, who said Delilah was back home and safe at Safari Farms & Exotics in Collinsville.

While it is illegal to own a kangaroo in Alabama, the farm has special licensing and permitting to breed and sell exotic animals such as camels, zebras, buffalo and ostriches.

It is unclear how Delilah got out of her enclosure, but the owner said he has had her for many years, and that has never happened. He said she was jumpy Sunday after storms came through, and he believes she may have been spooked.

For now, she is back bouncing with her mate at Safari Farms.

Reed said he is glad to know the roo is now off the road.
