Hoover residents and candidates for Place 3 are awaiting the results of Tuesday’s election that will determine if Ashley Lovell and Liz Lane will have a runoff.
Poll workers assigned to the St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church mistakenly included election results inside of their sealed box, requiring the City to get a court order from the Jefferson County Circuit Court to open and finish counting ballots.
The Hoover City Council had three open seats this election cycle. One of them was won outright when Robin Shultz beat Tanveer Patel. One is going to a run-off, and one is too close to call.
A spreadsheet available on the City's website shows all results with the exception of blank spaces across the board for the St. Peter polling location.
According to the Hoover Sun, Wendy Dickerson, the City clerk, was in the process of getting the necessary court order to open the box.
The most questionable race is for the Hoover Council Place 3.
With 17 of 18 precincts reporting, candidate Ashley Lovell was hovering right at the 50% mark, with 7,747 of 15,493 votes cast. Liz Lane was in second with 4,399 votes (28%), and Robert Williams had 3,347 votes (22%).
Lane posted a video saying, “We are the last race to be determined. We still don't know. She'll either take it or this race will go to a runoff. Here we go.”
“But whatever happens, I just y'all came out, y'all showed up, and thank you. This was a city council race, and I got over 4,500 votes, and that feels really good. So I just wanted to say, thank you," she added.
Lovell posted a statement to her Facebook page saying, “Hoover showed up yesterday! As of right now there is one box still waiting to be counted to determine if we won outright, or if a runoff is needed. Should a runoff be needed we are ready to go.”
She went on to say, “I am incredibly grateful for the support our campaign received yesterday and look forward to continuing to meet Hoover residents along the way.”
Sources say the race will likely go to a runoff with Lovell coming in at just under 50%.
