Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban is backing President Donald Trump’s push to overhaul Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules.

Saban has not only made statements but also appeared in a video posted to the official White House X account, where he voiced his support for efforts to bring structure and consistency to NIL policies nationwide.

“I would like to thank President Trump for having the foresight to know there’s things we need to do to change the future of college athletics,” Saban said in the video.

Saban emphasized his foundational desire to support student-athletes and highlighted his concern that the current system makes it more “difficult” to do so.

Saban also participated in a round table with Trump and other industry leaders to discuss NIL.

Trump’s executive order, signed in early April and titled “Urgent National Action to Save College Sports,” aims to regulate NIL and college sports.

Trump’s executive order outlines proposals to regulate NIL practices, limit transfers, enforce a five-year eligibility period and crack down on what it describes as “fraudulent NIL schemes.”

Saban has been critical of NIL for years, dating back to his time as the Alabama head coach. He even cited NIL as part of why he decided to retire two years ago.

“We don’t have a manageable system. I’m not opposed at all to players making money…but the way we’re giving them money now. Name, Image, and Likeness is not really Name, Image, and Likeness,” said Saban on College Gameday in 2024

Saban’s involvement adds significant weight to the discussion. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in college football history, he carries credibility with coaches, administrators and fans alike.

“We all need to look at the ramifications of where we are right now and what we need to do to create an atmosphere and environment where we actually can enhance the chances of people being more successful in life after athletics but also the respect and quality of life they deserve while they are playing in college,” Saban said.
