New details continue to emerge as city and school officials provide details about a frightening situation at Challenger Elementary School in Huntsville. A child in second grade was in possession of a firearm when it accidentally discharged during afternoon dismissal.
According to a report by WAFF, the bullet hit another student's backpack, damaging their laptop. School officials say that the child whose backpack was hit was experiencing ringing in the ears due to the proximity to the shooting. No other injuries have been reported.
According to the Alabama Department of Education's website, the school has a total student population of 450.
In an email to parents and school staff, officials reported that when students returned on Friday, the school will see:
Increased security presence: Extra security personnel will be on-site.
Enhanced screening: All students will pass through an Evolv weapon detection system upon entering the building.
Emotional support: Counselors will be available to provide support to any student who may need it.
Officials also encourage families to talk with their children about speaking up if they see something concerning.
