The Selma Police Department arrested a man after the mother of his child reported abuse to authorities.
Xavier One’ll Demond Franklin, 20, is charged with aggravated child abuse.
According to court documents, the mother of a seven-week-old baby boy told police the father struck the baby several times and cut the baby's private area with his nails after he was crying during a diaper change.
The mother told detectives that Franklin often gets upset when the child cries. She said the father responds with spanking the child as a form of discipline “due to his upbringing in foster care for approximately 12 years.”
The child had to undergo surgery at Children’s of Alabama.
Franklin was placed in the Perry County Detention Facility. He is considered innocent until proven guilty.
