MONTGOMERY — Members of the Senate State Governmental Affairs Committee passed legislation on Wednesday creating new Alabama digital driver's licenses.

The bill by State Rep. Ontario Tillman (D-Birmingham) has already passed the House and will now go to the Senate for their consideration.

The bill would require the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to offer residents the option to obtain a digital driver's license or nondriver identification card, in addition to a physical driver's license or nondriver identification card.

Upon demand of a judge, a peace officer, a state trooper, or any other state or local governmental entity, a licensee may produce an ALEA-approved digital driver license or nondriver identification card, and it shall be recognized as though it were a physical driver license or nondriver identification card if the bill becomes law.
