MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Senate passed legislation renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Tuesday.
The bill passed around 10:30 p.m. after a long, cloture-filled day in the Senate.
Sponsored by State Rep. David Standridge (R-Hayden), House Bill 2 would also require all state, local entities and their employees to observe and implement the name change where practicable.
The legislation aligns with President Donald Trump's January 2025 executive order renaming the Gulf.
State Sen. Chris Elliott (R-Josephine) said the bill “corrects the record” and reinforces American sovereignty.
“It sends a clear message that this is our neighborhood,” Elliott said on the Senate floor. “We’re updating our own federal and state references for American audiences. It’s common sense, not conquest. It’s not erasing history, it’s updating it for the American century that we’re in.”
