Senate Republicans nominated State Sen. Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) to be the new pro-tem on Tuesday.

State Sen. Pro-Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) is resigning effective January 1 to serve as Gov. Kay Ivey’s senior advisor for workforce transformation.

Senate Majority Leader Steve Livingston (R-Scottsboro) and Gudger were the two leading candidates in the hotly contested election to replace Reed.

“Congratulations to my friend and colleague, Garlan Grudger, on his victory today. As a caucus, we have a proven track record of improving the lives of our constituents, upholding conservative values, and making Alabama the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Moving forward, I am excited to continue leading our caucus as we remain committed to that mission.” Livingston said.

Gudger served on the Cullman City Council for 14 years and was elected president for his last 10 years. He was elected to the Alabama Senate in 2018.

The Senate Pro-Tem is responsible for leading the Senate in its legislative and administrative functions.
