A Serbian national was convicted of trafficking fentanyl and several other charges in Cherokee County.
Pero Markis was pulled over by Cedar Bluff police in December 2023 after the transfer truck he was driving veered into oncoming traffic. Officers found 50 half-gram packages of fentanyl on him and took him to jail. While in the Cherokee County Jail, more packages were found on his person.
On Tuesday, Markis was convicted of trafficking illegal drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree promoting prison contraband and two counts of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
District Attorney Summer Summerford said Markis will be sentenced on May 15.
“Fentanyl has become a huge problem in this country, and a growing problem in this Circuit,” said Summerford. “We will not tolerate outside actors bringing this poison into our communities. It doesn’t just ruin lives – it ends them.”
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Brady Burns and Assistant District Attorney Tori Ingle.
