On Saturday, Republican candidate for Alabama attorney general Jay Mitchell fired back at his opponent in Tuesday's GOP runoff election, Katherine Robertson, after Robertson dubbed him the "pick of the inside Montgomery crowd" during a recent radio interview.

According to Mitchell's campaign, Robertson represents "the swamp," and has already received over $3 million dollars from "dark money donors" outside of Alabama.

"Katherine Robertson calling anyone else an 'insider pick' is laughable," the campaign said in a statement to 1819 News. "She IS the swamp—from Montgomery to DC. She's the sitting Attorney General's right-hand woman. Her campaign is littered with lobbyists and bureaucrats. And she's bankrolled by well over $3 million from dark money donors who refuse to show their faces to Alabama voters."

Added Mitchell's campaign, "On the other hand, Jay Mitchell has never had to defend or explain support for his candidacy because it's transparent, conservative, and Alabama-based. Just like him."

Mitchell, a former Alabama Supreme Court Justice, and Robertson, chief counsel to AG Steve Marshall, will face off on June 16, with the winner moving on to November's general election.
