Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall responded Wednesday to newly released ads against him in his run for U.S. Senate.

The ads by the Alabama Freedom Fund, funded by Club for Growth Action, are in support of Marshall’s opponent, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise). The ads accused Marshall of being a soft-on-crime former Democrat and highlighted past cases in which they claimed he allowed criminals to receive light sentences.

Hours after the ads dropped in the Birmingham and Huntsville markets, Marshall appeared on Mobile radio's FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show" to address them. Marshall, who changed his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in 2011, said the ad is full of “half-truths.”

“It’s a sign we're winning, you know, and I consider that a badge of honor when we see out-of-state billionaires sending money into Alabama because they don't want a change agent to be able to go to Congress,” Marshall told Poor. “I mean, this is the same group that opposed Donald Trump from becoming president again, that will push back against J.D. Vance becoming our vice president, and spend millions of dollars against Katie Britt serving as our United States Senator. The fact that they're coming against me means that they're going negative in a way that they're losing, and the fact that we fought the ESG, DEI, all of the national issues have been able to make a difference, that's why they don't want me in Congress.”

Marshall said he has faith that Alabama voters know his record and know the truth.

“Look, we've litigated the question of party affiliation for me, a million voters both in 2018 and 2022 put me in the office to be able to serve as a conservative fighter, and they know who I am. And look, there's a bunch of half-truths in the references to some of those cases that are in the ad themselves, and we'll have the opportunity to be able to respond specifically on those.”
