The Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of a woman and injured her brother.
Deputies with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office were serving a warrant in Vance on Thursday when they encountered two people inside a tent behind a house off Gladys Drive.
According to multiple reports, the deputies were attempting to locate Ricky Adkins, 36. When they opened the tent, Adkins and his sister, Christie Lynn Adkins, were inside. Deputies said the sister tried to conceal her brother's identity.
Ricky Adkins pulled out a handgun and pointed it at deputies and deputies fired back, striking both subjects. It was later determined that the handgun was a BB gun.
Christie Adkins died from her injuries, and Ricky Adkins was critically injured. He was taken to the hospital and later charged with manslaughter.
