The Water Works Board of the City of Auburn is addressing reports that the water is smelling and tasting foul.
Customers reported an earthy or musty taste and odor. The board responded by saying the water is meeting all state and federal regulations and they do not believe there is a health risk.
“This condition is caused by naturally occurring compounds that are sometimes present in surface waters such as lakes, rivers and streams,” the board stated. “These occurrences are ordinarily seasonal and often occur during the transitions from winter to spring and from summer to fall.”
As much of Alabama experiences drought, Lee County officials said the lack of rainfall can affect water conditions. They believe forecasted rainfall and warmer water temperatures will improve the situation.
“The Board apologizes for any inconvenience and will continue to respond to customer water quality concerns and employ operational and maintenance techniques where possible to provide some improvement,” the board added.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Lee County is one of 19 Alabama counties experiencing an extreme drought.
