Law enforcement officials across the state are warning about “smishing” scams being sent via text message.

A recent scammer message includes a QR code demanding immediate payment for traffic violations. Although the recent text message appears to be from Jefferson County, people statewide have received the message.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office sent a reminder to citizens, warning them that scammers use deceptive messages to impersonate organizations, major companies and financial institutions.

“Recent reports indicate that scammers are increasingly using urgent language and realistic branding to pressure individuals into acting quickly,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Common messages claim issues with package deliveries, suspicious account activity, or offer fake rewards and refunds.”

The Orange Beach Police Department warned citizens who received the message.

They warned against scanning the QR code or submitting payment. Those who receive texts are advised to contact the organization directly to verify records. Scams may be reported via text message to 7726 (SPAM) or with the Federal Trade Commission online at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
