The family of a man killed in a boating crash on Smith Lake is suing Major League Fishing (MLF), MFL angler Flint Davis and Gary Holcombe, doing business as Smith Lake Striper Guide Service.
Snead town council member Joey M. Broom, 58, was killed when a Nitro bass boat struck a center console boat. His family is claiming negligence.
MLF knew or, in the exercise of reasonable care, should have known that permitting or encouraging excessive speed — particularly in conditions involving fog, limited visibility such as at dawn or twilight, congested waterways, or areas frequented by amateur boaters, especially on narrow bodies of water — created a foreseeable and unreasonable risk of catastrophic injury or death during tournament events," the lawsuit states.
Broom and two others were killed during the Tackle Warehouse Invitational fishing tournament on April 16.
John K. Clark, 44, of Cullman, and Jeffrey C. Little, 62, of Brandon, Miss., were also killed.
Little was a commissioner for Reservoir Fire Protection in Mississippi.
