The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly fight between a son and his father.
On the night of September 22, deputies were called to a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of County Road 214.
They found an injured 85-year-old man and his dead son in the front yard.
The father was flown to the hospital for treatment, and his condition is unknown.
The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Jeffrey Blake Darnell.
Investigators believe a physical altercation started inside the house and ended in the yard. They believe the son first assaulted his father with a metal rod, possibly a piece of rebar. The father defended himself with a revolver. After the shooting, the father was able to drive to a nearby house for help.
The son was shot three times. His body is being transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for autopsy.
According to court and prison documents, the deceased had a history of criminal charges and convictions, including domestic violence, harassment and assault.
