Spanish Fort Mayor Brad Bass addressed the community after becoming frustrated over illegal trash dumping at the City's recycling facility.

Bass said the City partnered with Waste Pro to offer four additional dumpsters at Spirit Park to accommodate additional waste during the Christmas holiday. However, he said those dumpsters were ignored, and people continued to dump their trash at the Ember Lane recycling facility, despite signs pointing them to Spirit Park. The dumpsters there were overflowing with garbage and boxes.

"Waste Pro currently picks up six days a week from this facility," Bass said in a video posted on Sunday. "They last picked up yesterday, Saturday morning at 5.30 a.m. Since then, you can see the condition of the facility here. We've got to do better as a city."

Bass said city workers had to spend much of Monday morning cleaning the mess. He said the City will now take steps to prosecute illegal dumping.

"We've got great cameras here at the facility," he said. "Moving forward, we will be issuing fines and also some public embarrassment for those folks that continue to show up here on camera, dumping, leaving their things here for the city to clean up. We've got to do better as a city and as a community."
