Residents are raising concerns after at least eight people have drowned at Oak Mountain State Park in the past five years, with the most recent two occurring this year.
The latest drowning occurred on Saturday. Will Aden Chisholm, 20, of Birmingham, was underwater in Double Oak Lake for over an hour before his body was recovered.
Pelham Fire deployed boats equipped with sonar and a dive team to assist in the search. The Pelham Police Department also assisted.
In March, a three-year-old drowned at one of the park’s beaches.
Although Oak Mountain State Park is operated by the Alabama State Parks System, the Pelham Fire Department responds to emergencies because the park lies within city limits.
Citizens have come forward asking why there are no lifeguards at the Oak Mountain State Park beach areas. The Alabama State Parks System declined to answer questions or comment on the drownings.
Pelham Mayor Rick Wash said the city does not have authority over park operations and cannot comment on safety measures within the park.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the young man who lost his life at Oak Mountain State Park this weekend,” Wash said. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time.”
Wash said he is grateful for the professionalism and dedication of Pelham’s first responders as they work through challenging situations.
Chisholm's family described him as a loving father, brother and friend. His sister said his death came less than three months after the passing of their mother. The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for final arrangements.
