She was a high-level staffer under Mobile Mayor Sam Jones for eight years.
Now, State Rep. Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile) has filed a principal campaign committee with the Alabama Secretary of State to raise funds for a campaign for the open seat of mayor of Mobile.
Drummond has not yet announced her candidacy but is expected to do so soon.
Documents on the Secretary of State’s website show that Drummond registered the campaign committee on February 3:
Her committee lists Gwendolyn Hall as chairperson and Emanuel Roberts as treasurer.
Drummond joins Strickland Youth Center deputy administrator Lawrence Battiste, former District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis and Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson as candidates who have officially qualified to run for office.
Former Mobile County Commissioner and City Councilman Stephen Nodine has announced his intent to run but has not yet filed the official paperwork.
Former police chief Paul Prine is a potential candidate. He told 1819 News that he would make a decision and announce his intentions by March 1.
The first campaign forum for Mobile mayoral candidates was held on February 12 at the West Mobile Republican Women’s Club. Battiste, Hudson and Nodine participated.
Drummond served eight years as executive director of administrative services and community affairs under former Mobile Mayor Sam Jones. Prior to that, she was the public affairs director for a decade in Mobile County government.
Drummond was also a reporter and columnist for the Mobile Press-Register when it was an actual newspaper.
The Mobile municipal election for mayor and city council seats is on August 26. The deadline for candidates to qualify to run is June 10. Incumbent Mayor Sandy Stimpson is not running again. A new mayor will be inaugurated in November.
