State Rep. Mack Butler (R-Rainbow City) has pre-filed legislation to prohibit classroom instruction or discussions regarding gender identity or sexual orientation in public pre-K-12 schools.

The bill is an extension of a law passed in 2022 banning gender and sexual discussions in a manner that is not "age or developmentally appropriate." The current law only covers kindergarten through fifth grade.

The new bill, HB23, would also prohibit public pre-K-12 teachers and education employees from displaying a flag or insignia relating to sexual orientation or gender identity on school property.

The bill has failed in the past two legislative sessions.

Butler told 1819 News the bill would bring the state in line with President Donald Trump's executive order cutting federal education funding for schools that continue to push "gender ideology" and other forms of "indoctrination."

State Reps. Ben Harrison (R-Elkmont) and Mark Gidley (R-Hokes Bluff) are listed as co-sponsors of the bill.
