In a Tuesday interview on Birmingham radio's "Alabama's Morning News," State Rep. DuBose (R-Hoover) voiced her approval of Alabama reducing or eliminating its income tax like some of its neighboring states.
DuBose, a member of the Fiscal Responsibility Committee, echoed recent remarks from State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) and said she would "love to see Alabama make some moves" in decreasing the tax rate.
"What about income tax? Are we doing anything in that arena?" host JT Nysewander asked DuBose.
"Well, I'll tell you what. That's what I'm interested in looking at," she replied. "We did drop the grocery tax down to 2%, and we saved our taxpayers about $325 million last week with a combination of packages."
"But one thing I'm interested in doing, and I heard Senator Arthur Orr bring it up last week, and so I kind of want to jump on this bandwagon, because it's been on my mind for a while, is slowly reducing our personal income tax, similar to what other states have done around us. Tennessee's at 0%. Florida's at 0%. Mississippi has taken a move to reduce theirs gradually to get down to 0%. And I'd love to see Alabama make some moves in that direction. We don't even have to necessarily get to 0%, but hey, can we cut it in half? Maybe half a percent reduction a year, get us down to 2.5% flat tax, something like that. Something that benefits everybody."
"I mean, a good tax system should be neutral, not favoring one sector over the other, and it should decrease the overall income tax rate," she concluded.
